Synopsis

Made in 1975, “De Sade’s Juliette” was one of Franco’s earliest XXX productions, predated only by “Sexorcismes”, the hardcore variant he produced of the 1974 film “Exorcism.” It was never released anywhere in its original form. Its only release anywhere in the world was as “Justine”, the Italian variant shared here, which was cobbled together by Joe D’Amato in 1979-80, who shuffled in some footage from another 1975 Franco film, “Midnight Party.” For some other unfathomable reason, Alice Arno is top-billed and she’s not even in it!
This is the only movie Franco ever signed with the name “Dave Tough”, using the name of a legendary jazz drummer who died at the age of 40. Seasoned Franco fans will recognize the “Midnight Party” footage, and be surprised by a wealth of new hardcore footage featuring Lina Romay, film critic Alain Petit (“Charlie Christian”, who actually strips off and performs some hardcore action with Romay), Gilda Arancio, Ramon Ardid and Franco himself, who plays an ecstatic voyeur – as indeed he must have been. In one fascinating sequence, we actually see Romay shave her pubic hair in preparation for her shaved role in “Midnight Party.” I can’t tell you what the storyline is, but Petit’s rock star character from “Midnight Party” is given a distinctly Sadean reworking in D’Amato’s cut, given to reading aloud from the works of the divine Marquis and whipping Romay and her lovers as they commingle. Furthermore, D’Amato treated “Justine” to a unique score by Nico Fidenco. Naturally the soundtrack is in Italian…
